Freezing Blue Tits!

 Click image to see Blue Tit large

It so cold over here in the UK, that our tits are in danger, well by 'our' tits, I actually mean the various tits that you find in your garden. No no, not a loved one building an inappropriate snowman, tits of the feathered kind.

Following advice taken from the RSPB website
The RSPB is asking people to follow a wild bird winter survival plan that will help wildlife during the harshest weather.

1. Put out feed regularly, especially in severe weather. Set up a bird table and use high calorie seed mixes. This can also be used to put out kitchen scraps such as animal fats, grated cheese and porridge oats
2. Put out hanging feeders for black sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts, sunflower-rich mixes or unsalted peanuts
3. Ensure a supply of fresh water every day. If it is very cold use tepid water but DO NOT use any antifreeze products
4. Put out fruit, such as apples and pears, for blackbirds, song thrushes and other members of the thrush family
5. Food bars or fat hung up or rubbed into the bark of trees is a great help for treecreepers, goldcrests and many other species
6. Put up nest boxes to provide roost sites for the smaller birds. They will then be used for breeding later in the year

All this effin cold weather has allowed me to play with my new foster camera out in the snowy weather. What is a foster camera I hear you ask? Well as I am taking the photographs for my sisters wedding, she has allowed me to play with her camera till after the wedding. So till June, I have her Canon EOS 1000D to play with, woohoo. You can see my photographic progress over on my daily photography blog or on my flickr.

  1. I like the idea of a foster camera - I'll have to think of someone to let me foster theirs!

    The whole northern hemisphere is in deep cold, but we are actually warming up (from minus 20 C to plus 3 C tomorrow - yay). I hope that's true for everyone else too.

  2. Have fun fostering the camera. :) Should be great for us to see what you're coming up with.

    STAY WARM. Keep those tits fed and yours bundled up. ;)

  3. Looks like you're doing a fine job of fostering your sister's camera as well as doing your part to keep all the blue tits alive, healthy, and reasonably warm.

    Oh, and I hope you know that I know that you did this post on tits simply to see what sort of search results you get! Nudge, nudge, wink, wink!

  7. Ah, so that's where the camera came from. Don't give it back, say you lost it!

    Being a big fan of tits of all kinds, ours are being well looked after,and I've just given them as much seed as they can handle.

  8. Back in October, I had one finch that would sit on my balcony railing every morning and watch me. It was like he was waiting for me to do something. So I went out and bought a little bird feeder. Now he and his flock of finch buddies come every day for sunflower seeds. They make me laugh as they lobby for turns. I figure helping our feathered friends has got to be good for our birdma...cgn

  9. A foster camera is an excellent idea. I always get such a kick out of your plays on words, girl.
    Good advice for the birds. Here in Texas it was 7 degrees this morning, and I've been carrying out seed and fruit for days to the cardinals and wrens who hang out in my yard.
    Gotta go stoke the fire.

  11. so all you need to do is feed that camera batteries? Good deal for you.
    There was a quick story (all our stories are quick) on the news about all of UK being blanketed in snow.

    well take good care of your titties.

  12. I can only imagine the search engine terms that will now drive people to your site. Maybe you should update us with a post sometime down the line. ;)

  13. The best thing about winter is the birds that stick around. Signs of life amid the dismal cold. I swear I saw and heard no less than a hundred crows squawking in unison in my backyard yesterday. I drank in every querulous note.

  14. Hope your tits stay healthy and that you will spring into spring early.

  16. It really is damn cold. Somehow whenever I am in the UK in the winter it is snowing and it's always exceptional. Must be me :D

  18. So simple and lovely is that last photo!

    My dad down in Florida is seeing a LOT of fish he would not ordinary spy, close to the surface of the water down there as it's been almost at freezing levels-- almost unheard of where he lives.

    So he's been capturing a lot of photos of some beautiful sting rays... sharks of various types... and barracudas in schools... all of which try to get near the warmer water heated by the sun.

    Dad himself, however, is walking around in about three sweatsuits and wrapped in blankets.

  19. I should have realised that a post containing the word 'tits' would have you all flocking to my blog!

    Flocking.. Bird.... Get it?

    I am just too much...

    I am not sure I like the implication that I, Saint Claire, would use the word tit for some untoward purpose. I hadn't even realised there was another meaning to it..

    /throws holy water around.

    I am really enjoying the 'foster' camera and really appreciate the sister for letting me play with it, although she hopefully will get some good wedding photographs out of the deal, well one hopes anyway!

    Okay I will admit to being slightly naughty with the doodle and post title, but having been an avid birdwatcher since birth, I really would like you to feed and look after you tits and other garden birds :)

    @ChrisJ - You should ask, especially if someone has an event coming up that they would like photograph? Snow is melting at the mo, but there may be more!

    @Crazy - Loving the camera so far, need a shit load of practice though! These tits are well looked after :)

    @Linda - It is going to be a long while before I can catch up with you, then there is that whole Canob/Nikon war.

    @Deray - and then it may accidentlly get lost...hehe

    @Anon - Knob off

    @Olga - You should know how nice my tits are.

    @Steve - Can't get use to you being a Steve. I just want people to save the tits, what is wrong with that? I hope you have put your seed out for them?

    @Chris - Yep I will misplace it or start ignoring her phonecalls. I had a feeling your tits would be looked after.

    @Cindy - Oh I love that tale, I normally hear that once people put food out the birds bugger off! Some folk have no patience. Also loving 'birdma' Hopefully that means we wont get shit on? hehe

    @Shelly, Hey got any pictures of your birds? I am sure that a word maestro such as yourself could have fun with a post like this.

    @Mo, hey mojo, I think I prefer my tits over your titmice.

    @lisleman, only need to recharge it, so it is even better!

    @Con Cog - I can help that other people have filthy minds! Hehe I think I will do an update post :)

    @NP, you are spot on, I love seeing Robins in the garden and the blue tits, they are a little flash of colour on a usually gray background.

    @Jamie, I hope so too!

    @Jean-Luc, they certainly are.

    @Bitter Chocolate, I am only down the road from you, so we are sharing in this horrid weather and now I get to blame you! Thanks for popping over to my blog though :)

    @Alison - Good on you and NO bloody chance :)

    @Jenn - Thanks Dude!

    Got any pictures of your dads? That sounds fascinating.

    @Nancy, Thanks for following, but I don't just follow willy nilly.

  20. Thanks for letting me know about your tits. I love the fact that in tip #3 they have to mention not to put antifreeze in the water. That kinda makes me sad for humanity, but I am happy that people are willing to help birds though. So I guess that means I break even.

  21. Grr, how dare this weather endanger our tits - mine are certainly bluer than usual!

    Trust you to do such a snappy entertaining post on the subject - mine reads like a right sob story in comparison! As usual I am massively behind (go on, make the obvious joke I dare you) so I'd better keep reading...
